The Wood Buffalo Complex fire continues to burn out of control just over three kilometers from Fort Smith and Fort Fitzgerald.

The blaze has grown to over 485,000 hectares with 320 personnel working to contain it.

As of September 13th, 21 km of the northern fire perimeter is considered controlled, while 93 kilometers is considered contained.

Heading into the weekend, Alberta Wildfire is listing the fire danger in the region as moderate south of Lake Athabasca, and high in areas north of the lake.

Alberta Wildfire is advising everyone to be cautious when enjoying the outdoors, as fires can ignite and spread rapidly.

A fire restriction remains in place across the forest area. Under this restriction, safe backyard fires, charcoal grilling, and safe wood fires in the backcountry are all permitted. Any burning without a valid fire permit is prohibited, and they are currently issuing permits only at the discretion of a Provincial Forest Officer.
