Closing arguments were heard in a court case involving two former Fort McMurray residents facing charges related to sexual abuse of a child and bestiality.

Andrew Wall and Marlena Bennett were charged in February 2021 with sexually assaulting an infant, bestiality, and possession and distribution of child pornography after the National Child Exploitation Crime Centre allegedly detected images uploaded online.

The defence argued on Wednesday in the Fort McMurray Court of King’s Bench that text messages from their clients that described sexual violence against children and a dog were fantasies that never happened.

However, the Crown prosecutor accused Wall of being a sexual predator and manipulated Bennett into being a willing accomplice. The Crown argued the texts exchanged between the two were written as if the events really took place, and even went as far as accusing the couple of looking for children to abuse.

A verdict will be made on February 13.
