The Canadian Grain Commission has dealt with four producer claim situations in the past six months, an unprecedented level of grain company failures.

Patty Rosher, assistant chief commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission was a presenter at Agribition’s Grain Expo. She says eligible producers are now receiving payments for claims against Purely Canada.

“The Purely Canada claim was a partial claim, so it wasn’t a case where we took all of the list of farmers, took the security and are paying it out,” Rosher said in an interview with Chief Agricultural Editor of SaskAgToday.com Kevin Hursh.

She also says they’re sending the money in batches, so the first batch of producers have likely received their money but the second batch, unfortunately, have to wait as the delivery of cheques are stalled due to the ongoing Canada Post strike. The CGC is looking into whether direct deposit is a suitable alternative for eligible producers.

“The money has been released from the security provider and it’s working its way through the security system.” Rosher added.

Rosher says in recent claim situations a lot of unpaid producers have been ineligible for compensation because claims weren’t filed within time parameters. Claims need to be filed with 90 days of grain deliveries or within 30 days of receiving a cheque.
